Learn to Edit Wikipedia

This guide cover the basics of learning to edit Wikipedia, including creating an account, editing text, creating references, and adding images. It was developed out of a workshop session by Michael Barera, a Wikipedian with over a decade of experience.

Communicating with Other Wikipedians

Wikipedians communicate with each other on talk pages, which are discussion-oriented pages that are paired with every page on the site.

Wikipedians generally post messages on talk pages for the purposes of collaborating with others, asking questions, and showing appreciation.

It is usually easiest to communicate with another Wikipedian by posting a message on their user talk page, although an article's talk page can also be used.

Navigate to my user talk page by searching for "User talk:Michael Barera" in the search bar.

Once you arrive on my user talk page, click on the "New section" tab in the right-hand tab grouping.

Compose a message like an e-mail: enter a subject in the "Subject" field, and then compose the body of your message in the "New section" field.

At the end of your message, sign your name with four tildes (~~~~). This also produces a timestamp.

Your new message to me will now appear at the bottom of my user talk page, complete with your signature (a link to your user page and user talk page) and a timestamp.
