PRIVACY

In a library (physical or virtual), the right to privacy is the right to open inquiry without having the subject of one’s interest examined or scrutinized by others.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality exists when a library is in possession of personally identifiable information about users and keeps that information private on their behalf.

To safeguard the privacy of individuals in their use of the libraries, the UT Arlington Libraries maintains the confidentiality of library records and actively supports the American Library Association's Code of Ethics that states: We protect each user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted.

The right to privacy is the right to open inquiry without having the subject of one's interest examined or scrutinized by others. Confidentiality relates to the possession of personally identifiable information, including such library-created records as closed-stack call slips, computer sign-up sheets, registration for equipment or facilities, circulation records, Web sites visited, reserve notices, or research notes.
