Capture Reference Browser Tool

Capture citations automatically with EndNote’s Capture Reference Tool

  1. In your browser, navigate to the webpage with content you wish to add to your EndNote citation library (journal article, newspaper article, website, etc.)
  2. Click the “Capture Reference” button that you placed in your browser toolbar. Screen shot of the Capture Refernce browser tool
  3. A popup box will ask you to sign into your EndNote Online account.
  4. A second popup box will allow you to view the data content that will be imported into EndNote. When the information looks good, click the “Save to” button.
  • Note: It is highly recommended to check all automatically generated citations manually after creating them.

Adding Citations Manually

  1. In your EndNote Online account, hover your cursor over the “Collect” tab.
  2. In the resulting drop down menu, click on “New Reference”.
  3. Fill out all applicable fields in the pane that opens on the right side of the EndNote screen.
  4. When all the data looks good to you, click "Save".

Using Cite While You Write in MS Word

  1. Upon opening a Microsoft Word document, navigate to the EndNote tab. You may be required to login to your EndNote Online account.

  1. Once logged in, place your cursor where you would like to add an in-text citation.
  2. Click the “Insert Citations” button in the EndNote ribbon.
  3. Use the search bar in the resulting popup window to find the reference you want to insert.
  4. When you find the reference that you want, double-click on it to import to Word.

  1. EndNote will insert the in-text citation and will automatically create your bibliography at the end of your paper.
  2. You can add new references and change your bibliographic style on the fly.
  3. You can move paragraphs around and EndNote will keep track of your citations. Click “Update Citations and Bibliography” to refresh.
