In January 2012, the American Library Association's Emerging Leaders Project Team C, under the aegis of the ACRL Instruction Section (ACRL IS), set out to determine the needs of librarians engaged in online learning activities and recommend changes to ACRL's current professional development opportunities and resources.
These issues are critical because online instruction is booming. A 2012 study published in College & Research Libraries showed that 47% of the academic librarians surveyed teach instruction sessions online and/or serve as embedded librarians. Additionally, 71% develop online tutorial or other materials designed to be used in online instruction.
