All About Call Numbers

Library of Congress Call Numbers are constructed in sections, which you should read from left to right. Each section is seperated by a space or a period. Let's take a look at the following catalog holding information:

Location: This will tell you where the item is housed. There are 3 physical libraries on campus, so make sure that you are going to the right one!

Call Number:

  • GR - first section contains letters and is ordered alphabetically: GR comes after GP but before GS
  • 830 - second section contains numbers and is ordered numerically: 830 comes after 827 but before 832
  • V3 - next section comtains a letter and a number and is read as a decimal: V3 comes after V29 but before V31
  • M23 - similar to the last section, read as a decimal
  • 2006 - last section is generally the year of publication

Number of Items: This will tell you how many copies the library owns.

Status: Yay! You can go and check it out. If the item is not available, it generally tells you when it is due back.

If you cannot get enough of Call Numbers, check out the Library of Congress website.
