Plays: How to find plays

Finding a specific play can sometimes be a bit tricky. Here are some tips to help:

  1. Search the catalog,, by the title of the play.
  2. If you don't find it using the title, try the name of the playwright. For example, Thornton Wilder.
  3. You can use the advanced search in the catalog. Change the search field to "author" and put the playwright's name in the search box. That way you will find results written by the author, not about the author.
  4. If you find another work by that playwright, click on the subject heading such as Wilder, Thornton, 1897-1975. That will lead you to all the works written by that specific author that the Library owns.
  5. If you don't find the play in the catalog, try the database Play Index. Use this database to find the play in a collection or anthology. You can use the title of the collection or anthology to see if we have that resource in the Library's collection by searching the catalog.
  6. You can try a Google search or look on to see if the play is in a collection or anthology. If you find the title to an anthology, you can then search the Library's catalog using that title.
  7. If the Library does not own the play you are looking for, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan.
  8. If you need help, contact Diane, or drop-by her office at 212 Central Library.
