Email Etiquette

This guide will help you craft emails that are professional.

Know your audience!

The first thing to consider when crafting an email is understanding who it is you are writing to. An email intended for your friend will look very different than an email you send to your professor or employer.

Ask yourself the following questions before you start writing your email:

  • Who is your audience?
  • How often does your audience use email for communication?
  • What is your audience’s relationship to you?
  • What kind of impression do you want to make?

Email is NEVER private, so be careful about what you write in an email.
