Academic Use of Video and Accessibility FAQ
- All videos used in the classroom or online must include captions to ensure equal access by all. Please note that despite many people using the words interchangeably, subtitles and closed captioning are not the same. Subtitles assume the viewer can hear music and background noise and do not include descriptions of these sounds.
- Faculty should confirm that films hosted on third party platforms such as Alexander Street have the proper captioning before including in any academic use. They may contact erms@uta.edu if captions are missing to see if the vendor is able to add them.
- Library staff are unable to add captions to videos hosted on third party platforms such as Alexander Street, Swank and Kanopy.
- Acquisitions will decline to purchase any streaming video that does not come with captions and the vendor is unable to add captions to.
- YouTube videos may be linked in Canvas if they already have Closed Captioning. If there are no captions, the faculty member will need 4K Video Downloader (software approved by UTA) to download the video and then upload to Canvas. Faculty are responsible for reviewing and ensuring the captions are correct.
