Designing a research poster

How to start?

The first stage to creating a research poster, require answering the listed questions:

1. What is the purpose of creating this poster?
  • Content Focus: Tailor the poster to clearly present the research's key message or findings.

  • Goal Clarification: Consider whether the purpose is to inform, persuade, or highlight specific results or methods.

2. When and where will the poster be presented or displayed?
  • Size & Format: The event or location may determine the poster dimensions and design format (e.g., academic conference, internal display).

  • Design Style: Adjust the poster's complexity and visuals based on the context (e.g., professional academic conference vs. casual poster session).

3. In what context or setting will the poster be utilized?
  • Visual Impact: If the poster is in a busy setting, use bold visuals, a clear layout, and a strong focal point to grab attention.

  • Durability & Portability: Consider print quality, ease of transport, and whether it will be viewed at a distance or close-up.

4. Who is your audience?
  • Content Complexity: Simplify or elaborate based on whether the audience is general or specialized (e.g., fellow researchers or the general public).

  • Language & Terminology: Use appropriate language that matches the audience’s knowledge level.

  • Engagement Tools: Use relevant visuals, explanations, and takeaway materials (e.g., QR codes, business cards) to engage the audience.
