Spring 2014 Workshop: Impact of Healthcare Legislation on Rural Texas

   

Objectives

This workshop contains two sections:

  • Sylvia Rawlings will present background information on recent health care policy and its impact on rural Texas.
  • Joshua Been will lead participants through a hands-on GIS exercise exploring healthcare in rural Texas.

Before Analysis: Explore Data

  • The ArcMap project should be open, but if not...
    • Navigate to the C:/HealthCarePolicyGIS/ directory in Windows and launch (double-click) HealthCarePolicyGIS.mxd.  Within ArcMap, we will explore each layer and variable.

Critical Access Hospitals - Distances from Eachother

This step will identify Critical Access Hospitals who may have their CAH designation removed if they are within a certain distance to other CAH hospitals.

  • Launch the first button on the custom toolbar

  • Specify the hospital type
    • We will use CAH hospitals
  • Specify the maximum distance
    • We will use 25 miles first attempt

Vulnerable Locations

This step will identify locations in Texas most vulnerable to any cuts in HIV health care.

  • Launch the second button on the custom toolbar

  • Specify whether the results should be limited to Rural Locations, HPSA Designations, and/or MUA Designations.
  • Specify whether the HIV counts should be the actual coutns or the Rate per 100,000
  • Specify the importance of the five selections (with green dots)
