Spring 2011 Workshop: Mapping Crime, Analyzing Arlington

Objectives

Learn how Geographic Information Systems can map, explore, and predict crime data. Using actual data provided by the City of Arlington Police Department, we will examine the distribution of burglary arrests and attempt to devise a (simple) model to explain possible predictors of these crimes.

  • After this workshop, participants will understand some of the potential of using GIS for crime analysis and basic linear regression techniques.

Workshop Plan

1.            Explore Data

2.            Create Fishnet (grid)

3.            Spatial Join Data to Fishnet

4.            Perform Ordinary Least Squares Analysis (basic linear regression)

5.            Calculate linear formula from y-intercept and x-value slopes

6.            Apply derived formula to 2015 forecasts
