Paws for Finals Spring 2013: Duke

Profile of Duke & Abby

Let me introduce you to Duke and his partner, Abby. Duke is a Red Golden Retriever who is 2½ years old. Duke was rescued from the Arlington Dog Park and taken to the South Arlington Animal Hospital where Abby adopted him in August 2011.

Abby has been a registered member of Pet Partners for 7 years and worked with her first pet partner, Shorty, until his passing in September 2011. Duke is very friendly and loves people and other dogs. Making visits to rehabilitation, assisted living, and retirement centers in the Mansfield/South Arlington area is a very important part of this team’s life. They bring such joy to people who are lonely and seldom have visitors. It helps those having physical therapy by allowing them to pet and brush and give treats to the animals, thereby exercising their mobility.

Abby and Duke are also registered in the R.E.A.D. Program (Reading Education Assistant Dogs). This program provides opportunities for children to read to animals. The Children’s R.E.A.D. program in schools and libraries helps children read with confidence to a patient, listening ear that loves to be petted during this activity.
