What is a SWOT Analysis? 

How to locate a SWOT Analysis

There are several databases that can be used for locating a company's SWOT Analysis.  Datamonitor, Marketline and GlobalDate are publishers of company reports which contain SWOT information. NOT ALL companies provide their SWOT's Datamonitor, Marketline or GlobalData.  In those cases you will need to look for articles about the company you are researching or try one of the other databases listed below.

The following databases can be used to locate SWOT Analysis.  The boxes below provide basic instructions for locating a SWOT within each database.

  • LexisNexis Academic

  • OneSource

Business Source Complete

  1. Type SWOT Analysis in the first search box. 
  2. Type Company Name in the second search box, change the "Select a Field" to Co Company Entity, click Search. 
  3. Review the choices, then click the PDF Full text icon to access the analysis portion of the Datamonitor report.
  4. The link to the "Regular" interface is below the image.  Remember when using this resource from off campus you will need to login with your username (NetID) and password.

Company Profile

  1. Select the "Companies" option.
  2. Click "Company Profiles".
  3. Type Company Name in the Search for box.  Change the Everywhere option to Company Name.
  4. Tyle SWOT Analysis in second Search for box.
  5. Select a date range in the Specify Date box.
  6. Select Source(s): Check the All Company Information option. Remember when using this resource from off campus you will need to login with your username (MavID) and password.

Open LexisNexis Academic

    Select "Source" (lower left), next click "Find Sources" option
    Keyword Box (top center) type in SDC Mergers & Acquisitions, click red "Find Sources" button.
    Check the box to the left of SDC Mergers & Acquisitions, the click the red "OK-Continue" button (upper right).
    SDC Mergers & Acquisitions will be in the Select Source box on the "Power" search page.
    Select a date range

Buyer

    Use the Add Section Search Box
    Section: change the "Select a Segment" option to BUYER
    "Terms box: Type a COMPANY NAME  (ex: Oracle)
    Click blue "Add to Search" button, the terms appear in the "Search Terms" box at the top of the page.

Target

    Use the Add Section Search Box
    Section: change the "Select a Segment" option to TARGET
    "Terms box: Type a COMPANY NAME (ex: Sun Micro)
    Click blue "Add to Search" button, the terms appear in the "Search Terms" box at the top of the page.

When finished adding search terms, click the red "Search" button to retrieve the search results.

 

Select "Find" from the Source Directory: (upper right)
On the "Find Sources" under number 2 TYPE Globaldata in the keyword box, click "Find Sources"
There will be 5 GlobalData resources listed. Check mark the "GlobalData Company Profiles", click the "OK - Continue" button (far right)
Type swot analysis and company name (Starbucks) in the Academic Search box, click Advanced Search options if you want to pick a specific date range
Click search

OneSource

  1. Go to the Database A to Z page
  2. Click the letter "O", then click OneSource
  3. Use the “ Quick Search - Companies” option
  4. Next, select the “Business Topic” tab
  5. Type in the company name (Starbucks), click the magnifying glass or hit enter
  6. On the "Find a Company" page, click the appropriate company link from the chart.
  7. On the "Company profile" page, select the Strengths/Weaknesses (SWOT) link (halfway down the left side of the page) to access the GlobalData SWOT report.
