Industry Codes

The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system was replace by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) in 1997. It was created to be used to consistently identify various products being traded between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. following the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  In addition to continuing the system of numeric "codes" to represent industries (similar to the SIC), the new NAICS code system better reflected the existence of newer technologies. Officially, the SIC system is no longer supported, but because of the long standing use of the SIC system, many publishers were reluctant to drop its use, and some have offered both systems in their publications/databases.
